Unless you’re in the deep south, planting in the unprotected garden is over for 2017.
General Tips for dark- and light-moon activities are below and for veggies – if your planting in a cold frame, low tunnel or green house - it’s above-ground producers in the light moon and below-ground producers when the dark phase is in, preferably when fertile signs are in force.
As has been the case for months now, November begins and ends with the moon in the light phase. The light moon rules until the full moon appears at 1:23 a.m. Nov. 4 and then returns at 6:42 a.m. Nov. 18, continuing until the full moon on Dec. 3 at 10:47 a.m.
The dark moon rules all but an hour and 23 minutes of Nov. 4 through Nov. 17. You can check the exact hours of the moon changes above.
Remember: Check to see if the moon is in the light or dark phase (information above) before proceeding with protected planting or other activities. At the expense of redundancy, no planting now in the unprotected garden. You will be wasting seed, money – and your precious time!
November began with a killing sign in force, so that’s where we will start.
Killing signs: No planting, transplanting, or dealing with things you want to thrive should occur on these days. Reserve them for cultivating, cleaning out fencerows, cleaning up your 2017 garden and putting it to bed (if you’re done harvesting late crops)— anything but planting.
Aries (the head), Nov. 1-2, 28-29; and Leo (the heart), Nov. 9-10. We go from a minimum of four days in October to six days this month ruled by the killing signs. I’m glad this is occurring now instead of in one of the planting months or I would have to be awfully upset! Six of a 30-day month lost to killing signs.
Fertile days: These are the most fertile signs in the zodiac. Here’s the breakdown as they occur this month and the phase of the moon in which they are in force.
Taurus (the neck) rules Nov. 3-4, 30 and Dec. 1. All but Dec. 4 are with the light moon ruling; Cancer (the breast) Nov. 7-8, dark phase; Scorpio (the secrets), Nov. 16-17, dark moon; and Pisces (the feet), rules Nov. 26-27, light moon.
There are nine days this month ruled by the most fertile signs: Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus and Cancer.
Gemini days: Gemini (the arms) rules Nov. 5-6. This is the best sign for planting beans and I planted a lot of beans this year! While time didn’t permit us to do much with them, there were tons of beans. Next year, when the danger of frost is over, plant your beans in Gemini and you won’t regret it!
Flowering days: There’s still time for those fall mums and pansies, which will last all winter, and here are the “bloom days” that are well suited for planting flowers. Here’s the breakdown: Virgo (the bowels), rules Nov. 11-12 and Libra (the reins) is up Nov. 13-15. There are five flowering days in November.
So-so days: These aren’t particularly fertile nor destructive, just so-so. They appear in this order in November: Sagittarius (the thighs), Nov. 18-20; and Capricorn (the knees), Nov. 21-22; and Aquarius (the legs), Nov. 23-25. There are eight days in November ruled by the so-so signs, all are under the influence of the light moon.
Here are a few general tips for activities other than planting:
>Pouring gravel: If you have gravel to pour on a drive or roadway, do that when the light moon rules through Nov. 3 and then beginning after 6:42 a.m. Nov. 18 through Dec. 3. The same applies for stones on a garden path: Place them when the moon is in the light phase so they don’t sink.
>If you’re setting fence posts, do that in the light of the moon so the posts don’t sink.
>If you’re putting on a new shingle roof, do that when the moon’s in the dark phase so that the shingles stick down and don’t curl up on the ends.
>Making changes: There are no perfect days this month for making changes when the moon is in the dark phase and signs are going out of the body past anything that functions - Sagittarius/thighs through Pisces/feet.
Like September and October, your other options then become going with half of the formula: either signs going out of the body beyond anything that functions or when the dark moon is in force.
