Here’s information for June about the phases of the moon and signs of the zodiac.
It’s hard to believe we’re already into the sixth month of 2018 and as crazy as this spring has been, for many of us planting has been all over the map because of cold, rain – even snow.
The good news is there’s plenty of time left for planting so have at it. And I hope you’re at least trying to follow the phases and signs, but I’ll admit it’s been tough. Let’s just not give up since following this system can make your good garden – whatever the size of that “garden” maybe – even better.
General Tips for dark- and light-moon activities are below, and for veggies when it comes to planting, it’s above-ground producers in the light phase and below-ground producers when the dark phase is in, preferably when fertile signs are in force and definitely not when killing sigs rule.
June began with the dark moon in force and it rules until the new moon – or no moon visible in the sky – arrives at 3:43 p.m. June 13. The light moon is then in force until the full moon at 12:53 a.m. on June 28.
When the full, or dark, moon is ruling, plant only those veggies that produce below the ground. When the light moon is in force, plant those that produce above the ground.
Ideally, check the signs and plant when one of the fertile signs rules. Don’t plant when the killing signs Aries or Leo are in force, no matter the moon’s phase!
Remember: Check to see if the moon is in the light or dark phase (information above) before proceeding with any planting - in a greenhouse or indoors as well as in the garden - or other activities.
If you can only utilize one aspect of this system – moon’s phases or zodiac signs – I would suggest following the phases. June, like May, begins with – and ends – with the so-so signs in force. So that’s where we will begin, too.
So-so days: These aren’t particularly fertile nor destructive, just so-so. Capricorn (the knees), June 1, 27-29; Aquarius (the legs), June 2-4, 30 and July 1; and Sagittarius (the thighs), June 25-26. There are 10 days in June ruled by the so-so signs, exactly a third of the month.
We’ve talked extensively about how these days, when they occur in the dark phase of the moon, are ideal for making changes. Check out that information below.
Fertile days: These are the most fertile signs in the zodiac. Here’s the breakdown as they occur this month and the phase of the moon which is in force.
Pisces (the feet), rules June 5-6, dark moon; Taurus (the neck) rules June 10-11, dark moon; Cancer (the breast) June 14-15, light moon; and Scorpio (the secrets), June 22-24, light moon.
There are nine days this month ruled by the most fertile signs: Scorpio, Pisces Taurus and Cancer. They are about as evenly divided as they can be with four in the dark of the moon and five with the light moon in force.
Killing signs: No planting, transplanting, or dealing with things you want to thrive should occur on these days. Reserve them for cultivating, cleaning out fencerows, plowing your plot — anything but planting.
Here’s when they rule this month: Aries (the head), June 7-9; and Leo (the heart) June 16-17. There are five killing days this month.
Gemini days: Gemini (the arms) rules June 12-13. The moon changes phases at 3:43 p.m. on the 13th, so all but the late afternoon and evening hours are ruled by the dark moon. Gemini is the sign uniquely suited for beans and peas. If you can get some in the ground after 4 p.m. on June 13, that would be perfect.
Flowering days: Virgo (the bowels), rules June 18-19, and Libra (the reins) is up June 20-21. There are four flowering days in June. Flowers planted when these signs are in force should bloom and do so abundantly.
>Making changes: If you have changes to make like stopping smoking, starting a diet or exercise program, weaning small children or animals, scheduling elective surgery – anything that requires making a change – do it when the moon is in the dark phase and the signs are going out of the body beyond anything that functions.
Days that fit that formula perfectly in June and into July are June 1-6 (Capricorn/knees through Pisces/feet), and most of June 28-July 4, same sequence.
>Pouring gravel: If you have gravel to pour on a drive or road on your farm, do that when the light moon rules, which is June 14-27. The moon moves to the dark phase at 12:53 a.m. on June 28.
The same applies for stones on a garden path: Place them when the moon is in the light phase, so they don’t sink.
>If you’re setting fence posts, do that in the light phase of the moon so the posts don’t sink.
