We’ll begin with some general tips with the April Overview following.
>Making changes: If you have changes to make like stopping smoking, starting a diet or exercise program, weaning small children or animals, scheduling elective surgery – anything that requires making a change – do it when the moon is in the dark phase and the signs are going out of the body beyond anything that functions.
Like last month, we have a lot of “change days” this month that perfectly fit that formula: the best ones are April 4-12, Sagittarius-Pisces/thighs-feet. There are nine perfect days, down just one from March.
>Pouring gravel: This is a very popular topic now as farmers and homeowners pour gravel to get roads and driveways out of the mud. If you have gravel to pour on a drive or road on your farm, do that when the light moon rules, which is April 16 through most of April 29, the moon moving to the dark phase at 8:58 that night after most gravel-pouring is done.
The same applies for stones on a garden path: Place them when the moon is in the light phase, so they don’t sink.
>If you’re setting fence posts, do that in the light of the moon so the posts don’t sink.
>If you’re putting on a new shingle roof, do that when the moon’s in the dark phase (through April 14 then April 30-May 14) so that the shingles stick down and don’t curl up on the ends.
Here’s information for April about the phases of the moon and signs of the zodiac. All times given are Eastern Daylight and the information is specific to USDA Planting Zone 6B. Simply adapt to wherever you are.
General Tips for dark- and light-moon activities are above, and for veggies when it comes to planting – which is what we’re really interested in here - it’s above-ground producers in the light moon and below-ground producers when the dark phase is in, preferably when fertile signs are in force and definitely not when killing sigs rule.
As we have established, April begins with the dark moon in force until the new moon – or no moon visible in the sky – arrives at 9:57 p.m. April 15 and rules until the full moon at 8:58 p.m. on April 29.
The new moon, or waxing (rising) moon, rules the second half of the month, April 16 through most of April 29.
When the full, or dark, moon is ruling – through most of April 15 – plant only those veggies that produce below then ground. Then beginning April 16 through most of April 29 those that produce above the ground.
Ideally, check the signs and plant when one of the fertile signs rules. Don’t plant when the killing signs Aries or Leo are in force, no matter the moon’s phase!
Remember: Check to see if the moon is in the light or dark phase (information above) before proceeding with any planting, in a greenhouse or indoors, or other activities.
April begins with one of the most fertile signs (Scorpio) in force, so that’s where we will start. And, as the fall of the signs would have it, the month ends with Scorpio ruling. We found a similar configuration in March except it was flowering signs that began and ended the month.
Fertile days: These are the most fertile signs in the zodiac. Here’s the breakdown as they occur this month and the phase of the moon which is in force.
Scorpio (the secrets), April 1-3, 29-30, dark moon on all but the 30th; Pisces (the feet), rules April 11-12, dark moon; Taurus (the neck) rules April 16-17, light moon; and Cancer (the breast) April 20-21, light moon.
There are 10 remaining days this month ruled by the most fertile signs: Scorpio, Pisces Taurus and Cancer. Six are with the dark moon in force and five governed by the light moon. This is a very nice mix for planting your early garden – if you are planting one and I’m trying if it will ever get dry enough!
So-so days: These aren’t particularly fertile nor destructive, just so-so. Sagittarius (the thighs), April 4-5; Capricorn (the knees), April 6-8; and Aquarius (the legs), April 9-10. There are seven days in April ruled by the so-so signs.
And all seven days find the dark moon in force, making them perfect for making changes with the signs moving out of the body beyond anything that functions and the moon in the dark phase. You read all about that above and when you add the two Pisces (feet) days, you’ve got nine change days.
Killing signs: No planting, transplanting, or dealing with things you want to thrive should occur on these days. Reserve them for cultivating, cleaning out fencerows, plowing your plot — anything but planting.
Here’s when they rule this month: Aries (the head), April 13-15; and Leo (the heart) April 22-23. There are five killing days this month.
Gemini days: Gemini (the arms) rules April 18-19. Both days find the light moon in force, which makes them perfect for planting some peas. It’s still too early for beans since they aren’t frost or freeze resistant unless you want to take a chance on some.
Flowering days: Virgo (the bowels), rules April 24-25, and Libra (the reins) is up April 26-28. There are five flowering days in April, down from eight in March.
